"You have cancer." No three words are as devastating.

That's why CANCER NAVIGATORS™ is so important to cancer patients and their families in Northwest Georgia. CANCER NAVIGATORS'™ resources are available to a cancer patient through a referral from his or her physician.

While your medical team will provide you with treatment options, we can help you understand what's happening to you and regain a feeling of control when it seems you have none. We also can link you to the non-medical resources you might need and, most importantly, we can help you find the courage to heal.

Modern science has advanced cancer treatments and improved survival rates for many forms of cancer. But healing involves more than medical care. An October 2007 report from the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies confirms what we have known for quite a while: supporting a patient's psychological and social needs should be an integral part of quality cancer care.

CANCER NAVIGATORS™ professionals know the most powerful approaches to healing are those that address the whole person, not just the disease. (After all, we certainly are much more than a mere tumor or blood cell.)

Our services include the following:

  • Nurse Navigators are experienced registered nurses who are specially trained to guide you through and help explain the often confusing world of medical, radiation and surgical treatments.

  • Service Navigators are social workers to help you access services that may include transportation to and from treatment, wigs or prostheses, spiritual comfort, insurance and financial support, or even basic things like house cleaning and exercise programs.

  • Education Navigators offer you and your caregivers small group sessions where you can more learn about your condition and the full range of treatments in addition to your medical care. These may include complementary therapies that often increase the endurance and confidence to respond to medical therapies. We also conduct forums for medical professionals and the community about cancer prevention, research and the newest treatments.
